2007 final year of double-digit DSLAM growth

CAMPBELL, California, March 11, 2008—According to Infonetics Research’s latest Broadband Aggregation Hardware and Subscribers report, the broadband aggregation market has enjoyed double-digit percent increases in annual DSL port shipments at least since 2003. However, the boom is expected to slow starting in 2008.

“2007 will be the last year we see double-digit DSL port growth worldwide, as major markets become saturated, service providers work to add subscribers on existing equipment, and other broadband technologies and architectures, such as PON, Ethernet FTTH, and WiMAX, become more common,” said Mark Showalter, the new directing analyst for broadband networks at Infonetics Research. “Still, there’s significant opportunity for vendors in this mature market, particularly in the multiservice access platform (MSAP) FTTH OLT segment.”

The report says MSAP PON and Ethernet OLT ports are the bright spots in the broadband aggregation hardware market, with total FTTH OLT port growth skyrocketing 767% in 2007 from 2006, and forecast to continue growing in triple- and double-digit percents annually at least through 2011. Growth is being driven by service providers increasing deployments of MSAPs in FTTN and CO applications to support triple play services.

Other report highlights:

  • The number of worldwide DSL subscribers hit 206 million in 2007
  • Worldwide DSL port shipments (from DSLAMs, NGDLCs, and MSAPs) were flat in 4Q07, but up 15% to 115 million in 2007 from 2006
  • Competitive pricing, combined with typical year-over-year price-per-port declines, drove overall broadband aggregation hardware revenue down 15% to $5.8 billion in 2007
  • IP DSLAM deployments grew 57% in 2007 from 2006, as providers around the world upgrade their networks to deliver new IP services such as VPNs, VoIP, and IPTV
  • Alcatel-Lucent, Huawei, and ZTE maintain the top 3 worldwide DSL port market share and revenue share positions in both 2007 and 4Q07; Alcatel-Lucent leads in North America and EMEA, Huawei leads in Asia Pacific

Infonetics’ Broadband Aggregation Hardware and Subscribers report provides worldwide and regional forecasts, market size, and market share for MSAPs, next gen DLCs, and DSLAMs split by ATM vs. IP. DSL subscriber forecasts and port detail (ADSL, G.SHDSL, VDSL, PON OLT, Ethernet OLT, and DS0s) are included.

Companies tracked include ADTRAN, Alcatel-Lucent, Calix, Ciena, ECI, Ericsson, Fujitsu, Huawei, NEC, Nokia Siemens Networks, Occam Networks, Samsung, Sumitomo, Tellabs, UTStarcom, Zhone, ZTE, ZyXEL, and others.
