RAN equipment market hits $10.2B in 2Q07

CAMPBELL, CALIFORNIA, October 8, 2007—The second quarter was a strong one for the RAN market, up 4% from 1Q07 to $10.2 billion, driven by unabated demand for mobile and fixed broadband, growing numbers of mobile subscribers, new GSM network rollouts in Asia Pacific, and continued network expansions in China, India, Bangladesh, Japan, and South East Asia, says Infonetics Research in its latest Radio Access Network Equipment and Subscribers report.

“The RAN market is now a three-horse race between Ericsson, Nokia Siemens, and Alcatel-Lucent, with an 8% gap between each player, but the Chinese 3G market has the potential to shake it up once all contracts are awarded,” said Stéphane Téral, principal analyst at Infonetics Research.

Other highlights from the report:

  • GSM shipments reach new record levels for the second quarter in a row
  • The number of worldwide mobile phone subscribers is forecast to reach over 4 billion by 2010
  • Ericsson maintains its strong lead in the overall RAN equipment market, followed by Nokia Siemens, then Alcatel-Lucent
  • Most of the RAN equipment action is in Asia Pacific, which accounts for 40% of the worldwide market in 2Q07, and will continue to increase through at least 2010 due to expected ramp-ups mobile network spending in China and India

Infonetics’ RAN report tracks mobile subscribers (split by 2G/2.5G GSM, 3G W-CDMA, 2G/2.5G CDMA, and 3G CDMA2000), and base transceiver stations (BTSs) and base station controllers (BSCs) split by GSM, W-CDMA, CDMA/CDMA2000. BTSs are further split by microcells and picocells.

Forecasts are updated quarterly for all regions. Companies tracked include Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, Huawei, NEC, Motorola, Nokia, Nortel, Samsung, Siemens, ZTE, and others.
